Prevent Mice From Entering Your Nashville Home

Mice seek three main things when approaching your home: food, warmth, and water. Because of this, bedrooms can provide the ideal space for mice to call home. They have plenty of places they can hide in here, from the closet to your clothing to yes, even your bed. Here’s what you can do to keep mice out and rodents of your home in Nashville, TN and reclaim your comfort zone.

  • Keep your room clean. Your room is a cozy spot for you to relax in, right? Well, it can be the same for mice. But don’t let them get too comfortable or give them spots to hide undetected. That means you need to maintain a neat and tidy space. Pick clothes up off the floor, remove cups and dishes from your bedside table on the daily, and don’t store snacks in your room.
  • Don’t eat in bed. Eating food in bed will leave crumbs, which will attract mice. Even a few crumbs can mean a nice meal time for them, so quit eating in bed even though it’s quite convenient for you to do while watching Netflix. Rodent noses are extremely sensitive and they will be drawn to those crumbs like a moth to a flame.
  • Raise your bed. Mice can actually jump quite a bit – up to 13” from the floor in fact! Most mattresses are 8″H to 12″H, which isn’t much of a challenge for them if your mattress sits right on the floor. Raise it up on blocks or use a box spring with casters so it’s as high up as possible. Don’t make it easy for them to join you while sleeping!
  • Don’t push your bed against the wall. Mice are also great climbers and can scurry up vertical surfaces such as walls. If your wall has some texture to it, mice could climb up the wall and gain access to your bed – not a far leap if your bed is close to the wall. Move it a few inches from the wall if you can to make access more difficult.
  • Don’t create mouse ladders. Don’t pile items close to your bed, which makes easy pathways for mice.
  • Fill cracks in the wall. A hole the size of a dime is all mice need to gain entry into a room or home. Look for dime-sized cracks or holes in walls and then fill them in. This will also keep other pests out of your home as well – a win/win.
  • Mouse traps. If you suspect a rodent infestation in your house, set mouse traps to prevent them from making their way into your bed.
