Having Silverfish Problems?

Silverfish can cause many homeowners to panic when they spot one. Lack of understanding is the main reason. That’s why it’s important to know the types of silverfish common in the Nashville area and when you should be concerned about their presence. This common household pest is gray or silver in color, hence its name. It has a flat body measuring up to one inch long.

Silverfish are nocturnal like cockroaches but don’t cause or spread disease. That said, they could trigger allergic reactions in some people. They can also contaminate food sources, damage paper goods and stain clothing. Let’s go over the three main reasons silverfish invade Nashville homes.

1. Silverfish Like Moisture

In order to survive, silverfish need a high humidity level of more than 75 percent. Sensitive to moisture, these pests like damp conditions such as in bathrooms, garages, cabinets, basements, and kitchens. To control the moisture level in your home, check for moisture accumulation around toilets, install air vent fans in bathrooms, and check cabinets for leaks under the sink.

Place a dehumidifier in the basement, and check the home’s exterior for signs of standing water. Additionally, be sure to keep your gutters and downspouts clear of debris.

2. Silverfish Like Dark, Warm Places

Silverfish gravitate toward dark, warm places that are between 70 – 90 degrees. That’s why they’re more common in summer, but they can set up shop in your home when you have the heat on in winter. If enough moisture is present for them to survive, they will show up in attics, closets and basements.

They will lay and hide their eggs in carpeting, floors and upholstery, so be sure to regularly vacuum these areas. Empty the bag outside right away to prevent re-infestation. Because silverfish destroy paper products such as books, files and cardboard boxes, keep documents and memorabilia in plastic storage containers with lids.

3. Silverfish Like Protein and Carbohydrates

The favorite foods of silverfish are protein and carbohydrates. They don’t just find food in the kitchen, though. They will even feed off the carcasses of other dead pests throughout your home to get their protein. And to get their carbs, they will chomp on cardboard, cereal, pasta, pet food, and even flour. Be sure to store food in sealed plastic containers so it doesn’t get contaminated. Clean dirty dishes right away rather than let them soak overnight.
