Your bedroom is your safe space, your sanctuary. The last thing you want to do is inadvertently invite mice into it. Yet mice are seeking three main things when they get inside your home: warmth, water, and food. Unfortunately, your bedroom likely fits the bill, as there are lots of warm spots for these rodents to hide in – especially if your room is cluttered.
From your closet and drawers to – yes – your bed, mice can set up shop in any number of places.
Tips For Discouraging Mice
Here’s how you can reclaim your comfort zone and keep mice outside where they belong:
- Eat in the kitchen, not in bed: It can be tempting to eat snacks and meals in your bed, but this action invariably leaves crumbs behind, which mice love. Don’t give them a nice meal to enjoy. Stop eating in bed while watching Netflix, as rodents’ noses are extremely sensitive and they will seek out those crumbs in no time.
- Keep a tidy room: Your room is cozy for you, but also for mice. There are lots of comfortable spots for them to hide in undetected, so be sure to keep a neat and tidy space. Don’t leave clothes on the floor, regularly bring cups and dishes to the kitchen from your bedside table, and do not store snacks in your bedroom.
- Raise your bed: Did you know mice can jump? It’s true: they can leap up to a foot or more from the floor! Considering most mattresses are 8 to 12 inches tall, they could easily gain access if you have your mattress on the floor. Consider raising it up on blocks or using a box spring with casters to elevate it properly.
- Refrain from pushing your bed against the wall: In addition to being great jumpers, mice are also adept climbers, able to scurry up walls and other vertical surfaces. Particularly if your wall has texture to it, it would be easy for mice to climb up the wall and get onto your bed. If your bed is right up against a wall, consider moving it a few inches away to discourage access.
- Fill cracks in the wall: All mice need is a hole the size of a dime to get into a room. Check for dime-sized cracks, gaps, or holes in your walls and then try to fill each one in with caulk, which will also serve to keep other pests out of your room, such as insects.
- Don’t create mouse ladders: Refrain from piling items close to your bed. This essentially creates easy pathways for mice.
- Set mouse traps: If you think you may have a rodent infestation elsewhere in the house, put out mouse traps to deter them before they get anywhere near your bed.
